なぜベトナムの越南は『越』なの？由来は？

『越南』と命名された由来は、ベトナムの歴史から来ていると言われています。

『越』は、中国の春秋時代に東部の浙江省の辺りにあった国の名前で、ベトナムは越の南部にあったから『越国南部の地』という意味で『越南』と言われています。

ちなみに『越』とは、四字熟語の呉越同舟（ごえつどうしゅう）の『越』です。

呉越同舟とは、仲が悪い者同士（呉と越は国同士で仲が悪かった）が、同じ目的のために協力し合うことを意味します。

ベトナムは昔、漢字を使用していた

ベトナムは、その昔北部ベトナムは約1,000年もの長い間、中国の支配下にありました。

中国の支配下の間は、中国から漢字を含めた儒教や仏教などの中国の文化の強い影響を受けて、漢字を使用していました。

その後近代になってからはフランスやアメリカの支配下となり、アルファベットをベースにした現在のベトナム語が公用語になります。

ベトナム語が公用語になっても、昔使用されていた漢字がベトナム語に置き換えられて使われており、それが漢越語です。

 

ベトナムの漢越語の例

ベトナム語は発音がかなり難しい言語ではありますが、漢越語のおかげで、日本人にとっては単語を覚えやすいです。

特に漢越語は日本語の読みとほぼ同じという特性があり、もし見た目で分からなくても発音してみると「あーあれか！」となることが多いです。

ただ、6種類ある声調と母音や子音まで日本語とは違うところが多いので、そのまま日本語読みをしても通じないのがベトナム語の難しいところ。
